Jay-Z's producer to launch SA bursary

Cape Town – Hip hop star Jay-Z's producer Gimel Keaton, who goes by the name Young Guru, will be in Cape Town on Monday to launch a Scholarship Fund, reports Sowetanlive.co.za.

Keaton, who has been Jay-Z's producer for the last 12 years, will be at the School of Audio Engineering (SAE Institute) where he will launch the fund.

The scholarship is a partnership between SAE, Young Guru and the Heal the Hood project. It will facilitate a year of full time study in sound production for a select candidate.

A few students will be shortlisted and screened before Keaton picks a winner who will walk away with the scholarship worth R60 000 to study at the institute.

'He will be going to Mitchell's Plain'

According to the institute's Trenton Birch the producer will also be hosting two workshops while he is in the country.

"He will be going to Mitchell's Plain too because we all believe that there is a real and rich history of hip hop there. Also, we are excited to have someone of his calibre to expose to our students."

The newspaper report states that more than 180 people will get to spend time with Keaton over the two days.

The institute is the only one of its kind on the continent but is one of 54 campuses around the world. It mainly focuses on sound production, digital film production and 3D animation.

The producer will also be performing in Long Street's Zula Bar alongside local DJs during his time here.
