Johnny Clegg to join Santana on SA tour

Cape Town – Big Concerts announced on Tuesday that Johnny Clegg will be joining Santana as a special guest on the Johannesburg leg of his South African tour.

Clegg will be joining Carlos Santana and his band for their show on 1 March 2014 at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.

Clegg formed the country’s first multi-racial band, Jaluka, along with Sipho Mchunu in 1969. The group dispersed in 1985 but Clegg formed a second band, Savuka, whose debut album, Third World, sold over two million copies.

Their subsequent album, Shadow Man marked the beginning of their world tour where they opened for Steve Winwood as well as George Michael. Savuka’s fourth album, Heat, Dust and Dreams garnered the band a Grammy nomination as well as a Billboard music award for the best world music album.

Carlos Santana, 66, became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered a fusion of rock and Latin American music.

He has won 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards and made the number 20 spot on Rolling Stones’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.

Santana is well known for hits such as Smooth, co-written and sung by Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Maria Maria and collaboration with Everlast, Put Your Lights On.
