Juanita tops Lady Gaga in sales

Johannesburg - Juanita du Plessis is the top selling South African artist for 2010 with her album Engel van my hart.

According to the list of overall CD sales in South Africa (including international artists) the only album that sold more was American singer Alicia Keys’ Element of Freedom.

The official list of the top 30 CD’s was released on Saturday. The list is compiled according to the way artists perform on the official weekly top 20 list that is broadcasted on RSG (Radio Sonder Grense).

The top 20 list is compiled weekly according to official CD sales in stores countrywide and only actual sales in stores are taken into account.

Du Plessis was ecstatic on Saturday when she heard the news.

“Now this is what I call a wow!-moment in my life. I am thankful. Thank you to all my supporters. And thank you to my Creator.”

She said it’s unbelievable that she beat international top sellers like Eminem (no 13), Susan Boyle (no 18), Lady Gaga (no 25) and Enrique Iglesias (no 30).

Together with her album, another four local albums fall under the top six best sellers.  Following Du Plessis’ album is The Parlotones with Live Design at no 3, Romanz with Ek sal getuig at no 4  and the album 2010 - ’n Dekade van Afrikaanse Treffers at no 5. Steve Hofmeyr’s Duisend en een is no 6.

Young singer Bobby van Jaarsveld’s album Net vir jou came in at no 16.

Another debut is that of twin brothers Locnville, whose Sun in My Pocket came in at no 19.
