Karin Kortjé comes clean

Cape Town - Karin Kortjé, who won Idols in 2005 has confessed that she drank "since childhood" and "smoked herself senseless" using marijuana.

She also used Mandrax.

These revelations have arisen amidst the news that she and her husband of two years Shaundore Aspeling's marriage are on the rocks.

"To be honest, our relationship was initially all about the sex," Kortjé says in the latest issue of Kuier magazine.

The singer is speaking out for the first time about her troubled past, because she "doesn’t want to hide details about anything in her life anymore".

'A big mistake'

Kortjé made headlines three years ago when Cheslin Williams, her boyfriend at the time, was charged with the murder of guesthouse owner Renate Kellerman.

"It was a big mistake to let him into my life and my career. I was naïve and trusted him," said Kortjé.

She was "madly in love" with him; a love that later cost her a record deal, an overseas trip and various opportunities.

Kortjé, who used to be a farm worker in Grabouw, says that she knew all the shebeens there and stayed there when everything started to fall apart.

Kortjé also confesses that her late mother often physically abused her and fought with her, "the way one would fight a man".

"To the public I just want to say that I am truly sorry about everything. I will try my best to prove to you that my heart is true."
