Local band becomes 'Bok ambassadors'

2011-09-06 14:30
Cape Town - Afrikaans alternative-pop sensation Die Heuwels Fantasties have been invited by the Department of Arts and Culture to act as Arts Ambassadors for the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

They will jet off to New Zealand on Tuesday to join the Bokke at all of their pre-events and press functions. They will also do a few shows and attend a signing session with the Bokke while they are there.

"It is unbelievable. It almost feels as if we were chosen for the team, haha!  It is an honour to represent our country and to support the Bokke AND we have never been to New Zealand! Green and Gold!" says Heuwels band member Hunter Kennedy.

It has also been revealed that the group's second album, Wilder as die Wildtuin, has reached gold status in album sales; just under six months after its release. Their first album Die Heuwels Fantasties released in 2009 also attained gold status.

Die Heuwels Fantasties made history in the South African music industry with their second album when they became the first Afrikaans rock group to reach No 1 on SABC's Top 20 top seller chart. This chart has been going for forty years.

Couldn't get Seether? Heuwels is still very cool but Seether would have kicked some a@@

      Bernard - 2011-09-06 14:27

DHF beats Seether ANY day of the week.

      Mzungu - 2011-09-06 15:10

Seether is NOT south african. They sold out and americanised LONG ago

      Susannomore - 2011-09-06 15:16

The same band that can't be bothered to come home? Nah, let's keep it real

      SlayerSaves - 2011-09-07 01:52

@Susannomore Would you come home to a bunch of good for nothing people who rather bought "sokkie treffers" cds than support your band (who later it would seem was of international quality)?

      woodifer - 2011-09-07 15:26

seether is now an american band.

  • Bob - 2011-09-06 15:06

WTF??? was kurt darren busy? Most overrated band in SA.

      tribe84 - 2011-09-06 15:53

      Not busy, just kak.

  • Lunga - 2011-09-06 15:29

    What about Just Jinjer?

      Susannomore - 2011-09-06 15:35

What?!? So Ard can bugger it up again? Besides, they are LA based now, trying to "make it big!"

  • werner.bezuidenhout - 2011-09-06 15:33

Out of ALL the artists we have in this country THAT'S who we send out in the world to be the arts ambassodors?! wtf????

      derikbench - 2011-09-06 16:18

Die Heuwels is a fantastic band (although I must admit that live they have had a few less than fantastic moments). But yeah, they are better than Goldfish and Freshly Ground's effort at a worldcup song. THAT song sucks.

  • Chief Kok - 2011-09-06 15:39

    Do they know the anthem???

      JMsays - 2011-09-06 17:10

      wrong country bru...

  • ShanMo - 2011-09-06 15:42

    Terrible choice - terrible band!!!

  • geewiz - 2011-09-06 15:53

Another band lining up to screw the anthem... but we already know that!

  • Marla Singer - 2011-09-06 17:00

Hate them or Love them. They didn't exactly choose themselves. Congrats to them.

  • NO Philistines - 2011-09-06 17:13

Let me guess by some of the references below I guess you are all old and decrepit, Because we should be so lucky that the Heuwels Fantasties go to NZ and not some meat faced back track abusing swine like Kurt Darren. If that ever happened I would hang my head in shame and deny my heritage.

      Bob - 2011-09-06 18:25

No i'm not old or decrepit, Heuwels in my book aren't much better than kurt, My choice would have been someone with talent like No One's Arc, SGQ or Float Parade.

  • Audrey - 2011-09-06 18:55

Trots Suid-Afrikaans!! My geliefde Musiekgroep!!! Geniet dit!! Hoop die klomp "wegloopers" verlang so baie huistoe, dat hulle weer sal terugkeer na ons mooie land.

      Arty - 2011-09-08 10:54

What. Speak English. This band must only be popular in Pofadder.

  • Audrey - 2011-09-06 18:57

Fantasties!! Trots Suid-Afrikaans! Ek is mal oor julle mooi lirieke en musiek. Geniet dit!

  • ron-burgandy - 2011-09-07 00:08

cool just hope they do songs off their previous album...that one had some awesome tunes on and it has great South African flavor!

  • Viv - 2011-09-07 07:34

Wow people are so mean. DHF is a fantastic band. Kurt Darren, Seether, Just Jinger and the rest are also all great in their own right. Why do SA people have to be so negative and rude all the time. Just because we are stuck behind a desk not achieving some notoriety like DHF doesnt mean you have to be horrible and take cheap shots. I think it is fantastic that a SA band is going to be jamming in NZ. Awesome for DHF. Well don guys - love both your albums and cant wait for more!

  • Shakes - 2011-09-07 11:29

Any idea who's singing our national anthem at the games?

  • ZippyRacer - 2011-09-07 14:36

Wat n freaking awesome band!! Gaan ouens, maak ons trots!

  • wim727 - 2011-09-08 05:20

Die gelukkigste wat ek ooit was, op die naat van my rug in die natuur reservaat !!!!

  • 2WhiteStars - 2011-09-08 12:21

We South Africans are very good at coming together during major sporting events, but when the final whistle has blown - we're back at each other's throats.

  • Tersea - 2011-09-12 21:20

Very funny. What happened to JustJinger? Honestly?
