Los Angeles - Producers have confirmed that the MTV VMAs will pay tribute to Britney Spears and possibly Amy Winehouse at the 2011 ceremony.
Producers have admitted that they were considering "acknowledging" Winehouse at the ceremony. Billboard.com spoke to executive producer Amy Doyle, who said: "We had a great history with Amy. She was very near and dear to us."
MTV screened a video tribute a day after the singer died earlier this year.
On Britney, Doyle added: "Britney will be at the show and we'll be paying tribute to her (...) she was having an incredible year and she is so beloved by the MTV audience that we started to think what could we do that would be a different experience (from years past)," said Doyle, the executive vice president of Music and Talent for MTV.
"Obviously everything from her choreography to her fashion to her videos will be (covered). We said 'let's challenge ourselves to do something unique'."
Spears' infamous performance at the 2007 VMAs became a YouTube sensation, and is widely regarded as a lowpoint in the singer's career..
The VMAs take place on August 28.
