Madonna gig stirs anger in UAE

Abu Dhabi - A concert by Madonna stirred up an angry reaction in the United Arab Emirates as the singer was accused of "immorality" and "religious insults" on social networking sites.

The concert, which took place on Sunday night and was attended by 22 000 fans who paid up to $300 per ticket, saw the 53-year old star dress up as a cheerleader and appear among Christian imagery carrying a gun, amongst other displays.

After keeping the audience waiting for almost 90 minutes, the show opened with a scene of bell-ringing.

With a cross in the background, the singer appeared dressed in black and holding a machine gun.

There had previously been calls on social networking sites for the concert to be cancelled out of solidarity with the victims of violence in Syria.

Most of those attending the concert were US and European residents in the Gulf state.

Although the singer's costumes were not provocative, some aspects of the show were described by attendees as "too daring to be suitable for Gulf society's customs and traditions."

Waiting for the group of "faithless radicals" to start mocking Islam & the traditions of the Middle East... Because that's all they do...

The problem with the gulf Kings is that they want to impress America inorder for them to be protected from the might of IRAN. I personally do not understand how they can allow such an immoral person to stage a concert in a muslim country,it is out of line.

      really? out of line hey?

  • zaatheist - 2012-06-05 13:12

I'll tell you what is immoral. Strapping bombs to innocent young children and sending to a crowded market place is immoral. Honour killings are immoral. Female genital mutilation is immoral. Denying women equal rights is immoral. PAH!

@zaatheist, Blinding & lesui07: It's obvious you have no clue about the UAE. The Emirates (with maybe the exception of Sharjah) are modern, tolerant and not at all radical. That said, Madonna is "immoral" regularly, and is no stranger to religious insults, no matter what religion.

"Backward prejudices"...someone said. hmmmm......Strutting your naked body on stage and holding a machine gun with the Holy Cross as a backdrop must really be the modern thing to do!!!!Or does it speak volumes of the singer herself and the people that dont find a problem with her beahviour!!!!

      Stefanus - 2012-06-05 13:24

      hahahaha funny guy!

      zaatheist - 2012-06-05 13:25

I don't have a problem. I am more offended by a geriatric virgin in gilt robes, a stupid hat and Gucci shoes waving a solid gold crucifix and telling everyone else to help the poor.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-05 13:46

Wow! Strutting naked bodies and taking the mickey out of stupidity sounds like fun to me.

The point is, Madonna is annoying, and tries so hard to be relevant and controversial at the age of 53. She needs to pipe down now and let Generation X, Y and Z take control of pop culture.

@A: "...strutting your naked body on stage and holding a machine gun with the Holy Cross" but: "With a cross in the background, the singer appeared dressed in black and holding a machine gun." and "Although the singer's costumes were not provocative..." Please learn to read.

  • Jean - 2012-06-05 13:35

Madonna is overrated and trying to hard to be controversial and UAE and all those muslim countries should stop acting all holy cos what goes on behind the scenes would make madonna's act feel like an innocent barney show.

Why would anyone want to go and see this old piece of mutton dressed as lamb anyway?

This is what Madonna will always be- outrageous and daring. I was at the concert- yes, it was an eye opener- but- if you know Madonna, this is what you would expect. Her concert was awesome despite the late start.I wondered after that what the overall reaction would be and whether she would have been asked to tone down her second show the next day - it carried on as the first day- so no worries.

I love these comments...... I lived in the Middle East for 9 years and although I met some very nice decent people, I came across too much immorality and porn. So many of the Muslim men I worked with drank alcohol daily and regularly took "sex" holidays on their own in Vietnam, India or Thailand. I have never seen workers treated so badly. There is a lot of evil lurking beneath the "faith". Although being "Gay" is considered "evil" in Islam, it is common knowledge that the royal houses of Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi have many "gender confused" individuals. Perhaps Muslims should face the facts and do something about their own brethren before they label every "Non believer" as being evil.
