Metro FM Music Awards nominees announced

Johannesburg - The announcement of the 2013 Metro FM Music Awards nominees was teeming with the usual suspects - celebrities, spotlight hoggers and fashion attention seekers.

Crooner Donald, of Deny fame, came up tops with six nominations, including Best Single, Music Video and Dance Album. He tweeted that he was humbled by the nominations and walked around with a barely contained grin all night.

AKA showed up at Summer Place in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, sporting a complete hipster transformation that included the ubiquitous "tempo" cut and black-framed big glasses. He went a step further by sporting a gold-teeth grill on his bottom chompers.

Gone are the days when rappers were hard-core guys with prison tattoos and a "don't-mess-with-me" attitude.

AKA is nominated for Best Single (Jealousy), and will be battling it out with HHP (Bosso), DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota (Stokvel), Fistaz Mixwell for (Hade Mabebeza) as well as Donald (Deserve).

Home favourites

Drive time co-host Unathi was nominated four times for her album With Love - for Best Female Album, Best Styled Artist or Group, Best African Pop Album and Best Music Video. After her third nomination was announced, a guest uttered: "They are nominating themselves, lana!"

Unathi joins fellow Metro FM jocks Amon and Thato who are nominated for Best Group Album for Recipe No 1.

In the Best Female category, Unathi will be competing against retro punk favourite Toya Delazy, soul sister Lulu Dikana and newbie Moneoa.

The most popular, and probably most coveted category after House, was the Best Hip-Hop category where the likes of HHP, Khuli Chana and PRO as well as Teargas, Shugasmakx and Zakwe will be battling it out.

The Best Newcomer category features the likes of Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa, Moneoa, The Muffinz and Zakwe.

The Metro FM Music Awards will be held in Durban on 26 February.
