Pete Doherty could face jail time

Regensburg - British rock singer Pete Doherty could face up to five years in prison after charges were filed in the German town of Regensburg relating to a break-in at a music shop, public prosecutors said on Monday.

The charges were of criminal negligence whilst under the influence of alcohol, a spokesperson for Regensburg prosecutors said, without giving any further details. If convicted, Doherty could spend five years behind bars.

The 31-year-old singer admitted in March that he, together with two other men, had smashed the shop's window, though he couldn't remember what happened next. A guitar and a record were stolen and later found in the town square.

Doherty was in Regensburg, in the southern state of Bavaria, for the filming of a costume drama in which he plays womanising 19th-century French poet Alfred de Musset.

He has fronted the bands The Libertines and Baby Shambles, as well as being infamous for his drug addictions and relationship with ex-girlfriend and top model Kate Moss.
