Los Angeles - Deep Purple, NWA and Procol Harum are nominated for induction to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The acts - along with 12 others - have been shortlisted for inclusion in the Hall of Fame, located in Cleveland, US, in 2013.

Nominees chosen for the first time are The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Albert King, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Meters, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Rush and the late disco diva Donna Summer.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Heart return to the list after also being nominated in 2012.

Artists are eligible for inclusion in the hall 25 years from the release of their first single.

The public will vote

The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame's Joel Peresmen said: "The definition of 'rock 'n' roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music.

"This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is 'rock 'n' roll.'"

For the first time in its history, the Hall of Fame is also offering fans the opportunity to participate in the selection process. The public will vote for their favourite artists to be inducted, with the top five acts comprising a "fan's ballot" that will count alongside those of the industry executives who pick the inductees.

Results of the nominations will be announced in December and acts will be inducted on 18 April next year at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
