Roxette slams OR Tambo airport

2012-06-11 14:26
Cape Town – Swedish pop duo Roxette described OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg as one of the worst airports in the world.

Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, who performed in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban last week, posted the following on their Facebook page on Saturday:

"Just spent 90 minutes at one of the world's worst airports; Johannesburg. Could actually be the No 1 on that scary list....Good God, how about some organization with customs etc? Leaving now. Thank you."

On Monday, the post had more than 100 comments with some fans saying a 90-minute wait "was not that long", while others blamed the government for poor service delivery.

Roxette later replied to Facebook users with the following comment: "We love South Africa. You know that! But someone should fix the logistix at Jo-burg Airport. A job for BoJo maybe?"

  • koo.doyle - 2012-06-11 14:46

Ridiculous, OR Tambo is very well run. I travel a lot and have never had a bad experience. Sounds like typical 'celeb' prima donna behaviour to me.

      Lynn - 2012-06-11 14:55

They can always`p*ss off' back to where they came from. Has-been's...

      Rob - 2012-06-11 15:12

      Lynn...100%

      hjvanrensburg - 2012-06-12 15:55

So typical of South Africans to react in this negative manner. People wake up. If something is bad, don't ignore it speak up !!!! That's what Roxette did. If you ignore problems they will become bigger. I thoroughly enjoyed ROXETTE live in concert. I will always support them in SA no matter what. Rox on

I BELIEVE YOU COZ I ALSO HAVE EXPERIENCED LONG WAITINGS IN DIFFERENT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS, HE IS JUST SUBJECTIVE....PROBABLY WANTED A RED CARPERT....COMPERATIVELY SPEAKING WE ARE WELL RUN

  • Hallo - 2012-06-11 14:54

Try customs at any other major international airport and you will wait longer.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-11 18:48

Wait till you see the waiting time in London during the Olympics...

      pablo.chavez.9081 - 2012-06-11 18:53

For a change someone who knows what he's talking about, everyone else should go fly a kite coz maybe it's the closest you'll ever get to taking to the skies

      hettief1 - 2012-06-12 13:17

I agree Hallo Heathrow is not that great either

      henk63 - 2012-06-12 17:34

Squeegee, is there any event running like the Olympics that we are unaware of?

  • patankecedrick.cedrick - 2012-06-11 15:18

    Hope they never come back.

  • dhavandran.palavar - 2012-06-11 15:23

everytime i landed at OR i was a few belongings short in my luggage. locks don't deter these thugs. to make matters worse, try reporting the theft to security and you wonder whether you are talking to an imbecile. no help at all. yes the professional service does not exist at OR.

      Stewart Croucamp - 2012-06-11 18:12

I am so tired of the theft at ORT that I refuse to fly. Disgusting airport.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-11 18:49

      Great airport, useless people.

  • Fredster - 2012-06-11 15:23

  • marlene.vanwyk.37 - 2012-06-11 15:39

I have travelled to many of the big cities i.e. Washington, New York, Miami, etc. and all those in between, and can honestly say they were not much better, in fact a few were even worse and staff were just rude! Isn't it amazing how these 'stars' come here and leave with a 'fistful of money' and then have a lot to say. Anyway she is long past her sell by date!!

  • thulani.makhathini.3 - 2012-06-11 15:57

This Roxette can go jump. Any international airport will have queues and if you dont organize your VIP pass that is your problem. We hosted real artist in this country & big events nobody has ever said such nonsense. Other airports don't even have respect for black people.

      melissa.dobrovic - 2012-06-12 08:33

Why make it a racial issue thulani?? I totally agree with the first half of your post but to conclude with "other airports dont even have repect for black people" - so not necessary!

  • deon.niemann.5 - 2012-06-11 16:03

We recently spent 2 hours to get through customs at JFK

  • bizarro.jerri - 2012-06-11 16:37

Who is this Roxette person? Apologies, but I live in the 21st century...

      russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-14 06:51

you seem to have left your intellect behind under whichever stone it was you crawled out from under of.

  • bishop.bishop35 - 2012-06-11 20:35

no rubbish shes to used to getting her own way,its part of the tour she must just enjoy it & rip on service in africa lol

      Tharina25 - 2012-06-12 09:45

She who? Roxette is a band you moron. Get your facts straight before commenting!

  • hein.huyser - 2012-06-11 21:01

@Roxette, I walked out of your pathetic show the other night. Wasted R1000.00, never again. Your band and yourself were so off-qeue it was sickening. Sad has beens that come to SA when nobody wants them and then they complain about their experiences here. Case of kettle calling the pot.....

      Tharina25 - 2012-06-12 09:46

Show in Joburg was awesome with 15000 people. Maybe you should've come here.

      courtnaymurphy - 2012-06-14 11:45

Um, hello, she's overcome brain cancer, and she's over 50! Give her a break. They were still amazing, I saw them live in Cape Town, Golden Circle and it was AMAZING!

  • andrew.schonfrucht - 2012-06-11 21:41

Can't rubbish someone for having an opinion regardless of their status it's what they felt. Ironic though seeing SAA wants to welcome the \World to Africa\ via ORT seeing there will no longer be any London-CPT flights. Do we really want THAT to be the Welcome to SA for tourists. CPT has consistently been voted as one of the worlds best! That should be the welcome visitors get. By the way ORT to me is no where near as bad as Lagos. Lol. But that's my experience.

I've been to many airports in my time, and OR Tambo is far from the worst. The last time I landed at OR Tambo it took me 20min to get through to lot, barely had to wait for my luggage, bloody impressed. They probably didn't know who this mob were so they had to que like the rest of the punters, so now they whining.

  • ohattingh - 2012-06-12 07:44

I think to paste that on FB is totally unnecessary. OR Thambo is not bad, it's not the greatest either but its ours. They should try out some other airports before passing such harsh judgement.

  • melissa.dobrovic - 2012-06-12 08:25

Well they started their concert 75minutes late so you would think they would be okay waiting a while in an airport!

      Williams - 2012-06-13 09:03

they must not even think of stepping on South African soil again

  • Chriskoi1 - 2012-06-12 08:54

Ek het my bagasie al laat oop staan en goed met waarde in gesit om te sien wat gebeur en het nog niks verloor nie .

  • GrootWitHaai - 2012-06-12 09:11

The Swedes are notorious for moaning....even more than the Brits.

  • Sittingbourne - 2012-06-12 10:32

I didn't have a problem with OR Tambo airport last year. I did in 2005 though when it was just a large building site.

  • sandra.marrai - 2012-06-12 13:20

Hooray! For a forgeiner to say something. It's usually the locals. And now anyone wanting to come to Cape Town from London with SAA have to go through ORTIA. Have fun. I would rather travel and extra 5 hours via Dubai where I know I will get great and friendly service from Emirates.

  • wayne.redman.7 - 2012-06-12 15:01

I must admit as a Air Crew member that has been travelling to every major airport in the world for last 25 years OR Tambo is starting to look like another typical abortion--went to the states last week and just as others have said took nearly 2 hours to clear security and immigration at OR Tambo. There are plenty of staff and desks but they are only intrested in talking and joking with one another--Just another African Airport now--try CT and see the difference

  • moniqueolivier40 - 2012-06-12 16:06

I think posting it on Facebook was really unnecessary. Their concert was a huge disappointment (waited 5 months to see it), but we didn't post comments on their Facebook wall to ssay how terrible it was not being able to hear a thing they sang! The show started much later than expected, but we didn't complain... we had to wait and just 'cause we are \normal\ people it was okay!

  • allison.steedman - 2012-06-12 17:14

And if they really want poor service they should fly into or out of Charles de Gaulle or Nice airport - the French have no idea of customer service, are rude, unhelpful and unfriendly. On an EU passport I queued for an hour to get processed in Paris en route to Nice. Not a Nice (pun intended) experience at all. Look closely enough and you can find fault with most airports in the world.

      Williams - 2012-06-13 09:00

not a nice experience they can't speak english and treat foreigners like criminals, try the airport at Frankfurt, worst!!!!! they don't even greet, passport is all they can say, our customs people are friendly and cheerful at all hours

  • Leon - 2012-06-12 19:30

Now you know why they climb over the fence at Musina, or come through the Kruger Park.

  • Williams - 2012-06-13 08:57

why are they coming to S.A so often, we are most definately not the worst, and they better not return! BOYCOTT ROXETTE, LOSERS! HAS BEENS! HAVE THEY HAD NO 1 LATELY, we are proudly South African, no 1, there was no complaints with the soccer world cup, maybe she expected red carpet treatment or was annoyed that nobody at customs knew or recognised her, now if only she was MI CASA?????????????

  • Joanita - 2012-06-13 09:19

Maybe Roxette should come to Africa where there is hardly any service and then she might be grateful that she only had to wait 90 min. Just because she thinks she is famous, people will go our of their way!!!! They are not there to entertain people, they are their to do a job and to make sure people, planes and the airport is a safe place!!!

  • marelie.steyn.5 - 2012-06-13 09:55

I would keep my mouth shut if I had such a disastrous humiliating concert in Jhb. She should not be allowed to ask money for that. What a HAS-BEEN !!!!!!!

  • sherazaad.sylvester - 2012-06-13 16:36

Just another diva complaining because S.A Customs don't bow down to her every wish and desire! I sat for over 2 hours in an Italian airport waiting to get through customs! So please just learn to sit and wait like everyone else. None of us would likes to see someone jump to the front of a line we are in because they are famous and cant handle standing in line next to us ordinary people. And that is what it boils down to. She is not pissed off because of the wait, she is pissed off because no-one recognized her and let her just walk on through.

  • Michael - 2012-06-13 19:55

Wait till they go thru Heathrow, Washington and others which are way worse. OR is pretty decent.

  • ruan.lacock - 2012-06-14 00:13

.....international airports....ARE AIRPORTS......expect delays....whatever....whoever you might be...... ...but Sa-immigration officers are a bit grumpy....most of the times !!

  • didier.bwerevu - 2012-06-21 09:30
