Rumours of retirement circle George Michael after shutting down his website

London - George Michael has sparked rumours he's retiring after shutting down his website.

The Careless Whisper hitmaker has removed all content from georgemichael.com, including official merchandise, leaving fans worried about the star's health.

The site's home page now features a closed red curtain but his representatives say there is, "Exciting news coming in 2014."

Almost died in crash

George, 50, suffered injuries after a near fatal car crash in May when he fell out the passenger seat of a Range Rover on a busy M1 motorway near St Albans, close to London.

The star, who has also previously battled pneumonia, was airlifted to hospital - where he remained for two weeks - after suffering head injuries, cuts and bruises.

Despite his health problems, George signed a huge record deal with Universal Music last year but is yet to release a new album to follow his 2004 record Patience.

No date for a new album

He brought out a Greatest Hits album Twenty Five which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2006 and hopes to record new music "very soon".

Last year he unveiled the track White Light, with Kate Moss starring in the video, but couldn't confirm a release date for a full album.

He said: "I'm amazed that people are still interested after 30 years."

"I've done a few stupid things to keep them interested, but it's an amazing feeling."

"I haven't been this excited about recording or releasing music for many many years."
