Cape Town - Plans for the South African Youth Choir to go to America may have been derailed due to funding problems.
The Youth Choir is in the dark about its future due to their main sponsor, PetroSA, being indecisive about the renewal of their sponsorship.
PetroSA has sponsored the choir for the last three years. The sponsorship will end later this year. The choir will then have to apply for the sponsorship again.
Thabo Mabaso, spokesperson for PetroSA, said on Wednesday that the company did not say it was going to terminate the sponsorship. "PetroSA has not yet discussed whether we will stop the sponsorship."
The choir currently consists of 45 girls and 40 boys. Among them are 22 matric pupils and 23 grade 11's.
The choir was invited to perform in America later rhis year. The uncertainty over sponsorships can however prevent the trip from happening.
"I hope however everything works out with the PetroSA sponsorship. If it does not work out though, we have the option of people sponsoring individual choir members," said Andre de la Harpe, chairman of the Youth Choir.
