Los Angeles - Prince and Sinead O'Connor "detest each other".
Sinead's career took off when she covered the little known track Nothing Compares 2 U by the US musician, but when they actually met up in person, they didn't get on at all.
She told Uncut magazine: "I loved his music, but I had absolutely no idea or expectation that that single would be such a big hit, not at all. Did I ever meet Prince? I did and... We didn't like each other. At all. Ha ha! I'm not going to go into it, but we detest each other.
"It got violent too, which is why I can't go into it, but it is a very funny story. I'll tell it when I'm an old lady and I write my book."
'I prayed very fervently as a small child'
Sinead's version of Nothing Compares 2 U went to number one in 14 countries in 1990, kickstarting her career, helped by its emotional video. Sinead has previously said music was her saviour in life.
She said: "I would definitely be dead if not for music. I prayed very fervently as a small child that God would give me a way out.
"And I remember distinctly walking home down this laneway, I can't have been more than five or six, and with the rhythm of my feet I began to hear music, and within that second I made the association with the Holy Spirit, and I said thanks to it.
"I felt it was the answer to the prayers. I get to stand there and scream and I have a right to, 'cause what else am I gonna do?"
