Singer receives 'another R2k less'

Cape Town - Christa Steyn actually received even less than the R6 105 that was paid to her by Maniac Music after a fundraising concert.

Steyn's son, Douw, said he thought the full proceeds of the concert will go to his mother. He therefore paid R2 000 into organiser Rika Vermeulen of Maniac Music's private bank account beforehand.

"I really wanted to show my gratitude by paying for Maniac Music's administrative expenses such as telephone calls. If you add my 'donation' of R2 000, my mom only received a mere R4 105," he said.

The "fundraising concert" for Steyn was held in November in Stellenbosch to help her with medical expenses due to cancer.

Altogether 37 artists performed for free, as well as the master of ceremonies, actress Lizz Meiring.

'I have no say'

The profit was divided between Steyn, Maniac Music (R5 648), and Vermeulen's assistant, Anele du Plessis (R5 648.89).

Du Plessis informed Die Burger on Thursday by e-mail that she is making "a payment of R6 000 to the Christa Steyn fund".

"I have no say in the financial decisions of Maniac Music. I withdraw myself from Maniac Music and regard the matter as closed," she wrote.

Steyn said he and his mother was "deeply grateful for her honesty".

It has since been revealed that money was also raised at the concert, in the hall of Bloemhof Girls' High School, by selling ribbons in aid of the cause. A total of R2 850 of ribbons were sold, but the money is gone. According to the statement of income and expenses that Vermeulen made available to the artists, it was "stolen".

Vermeulen replied to e-mail inquiries from The Burger on Thursday by saying she would not comment because the matter has now been referred to her legal representative.
