Steve hitchhikes to see U2 in CT

Johannesburg - After his big Bono saga, Steve Hofmeyr and a radio DJ from Ofm have decided to hitchhike from Bloemfontein to Cape Town on Friday in an effort to raise money to combat farm murders.

And to go see the U2 concert, if Hofmeyr can get tickets…

"Pick me up, and I will sing Die Bloubul for free," Hofmeyr told Volksblad on Thursday.

Their decision to hike comes after Ofm DJ Tim Thabethe questioned Hofmeyr's publicity stunt - throwing his U2 tickets in the Jukskei River to protest against Bono's reported Kill the Boer comment - on his programme on Thursday.

Chaos broke out

Thabethe said that the torn tickets were not real tickets.

He said Hofmeyr didn't focus the attention on farm murders but rather sent out a negative message.

The hiking idea originated from a radio listener who phoned Ofm and challenged Thabethe to hike to Cape Town to attend the U2 concert.

"The man promised R10 per km," Thabethe said.

Then chaos broke out. "Hundreds of people phoned in and offered a lift. Many promised money."

One listener suggested that Hofmeyr take part as well.

According to Thabethe, Ofm managed to contact Steve at 12:00 and by 13:00 he confirmed that he will also be hitchhiking.

Along the N1

The pair were planning to start their journey on Friday morning at 08:00 at the Ofm studio in Nelson Mandela lane, but Steve tweeted early on Friday morning that he missed his flight: "Man, bad start. Mis my vlug na Bfn. Moet wag tot 8. Maar hike sal ons. Skakel oor na #OFM. Ons gesels vanaf 6.15." (Man, bad start. Missed my flight to Bfn. Have to wait till 8. But hike we will. Tune in to OFM. We'll chat from 6.15)

They will be raising funds for Agri-Securitas, an organisation for rural safety. Thabethe says more than R50 000 has been pledged and more keep on coming.

Hofmeyr told Volksblad that he and Thabethe want to focus the attention on farm murders in South Africa. Every person that picks them up contributes automatically to their campaign against farm murders.

According to Thabethe they will be hitchhiking along the N1. In order to drive with as many people as possible, they will be stopping in every town to look for a new lift.

The two of them can be followed on Twitter.
