The Black Keys: Nickelback killed rock

2012-01-05 10:00

Los Angeles - The Black Keys think "Rock 'n' roll is dying" because of Nickelback.

The blues rockers blame the fact that a radio friendly commercial group like the Rockstar group have become so big, putting other bands off from trying to be authentic.

Drummer Patrick Carney told Rolling Stone magazine: "Rock 'n' roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world.

"So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit - therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world.

"Fuck that! Rock 'n' roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don't like to see it fucking ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit. When people start lumping us into that kind of shit, it's like, 'Fuck you,' honestly."

'Selling out'

The duo - completed by singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach - have always tried to remain true to their roots since they formed in 2001, and previously admitted initially turning down large amounts of money to use their songs in TV adverts, as they didn't want to be seen as "selling out".

Patrick said: "The first offer we ever had to have a song in a commercial was from an English mayonnaise company, and they offered us a lot of money - crazy money. Especially at the time, it was insane."

Dan added: "We were scared. We were 23 years old. So we passed on it."

LOL!!! What idiots, that's like not being picked for a sports team, because you suck, and then going "Well I didn't want to be in the team anyway!!!!!" What jealous losers!

What a load of rubbish!! At least we have heard of Nickelback - never heard of The Black Keys. Jealousy really makes you NASTY!! Get a life and stop being nasty because you didn't take the chance when it was offered to you.

      BaHahahahaha! "Jealousy makes you nasty"?

Nickelback is by far the best rock band out there (well in my opinion - they are the only rock band I listen to). Man! have you heard these guys lyrics - to mention 2 'Gotta be somebody' and 'Far Away'and Chad writes most of their lyrics. I just luv these guys. Cheers:)

This totally proves what the Black Keys are trying to get at. Due to the mundane, generic, copy and paste drivel Nickelback dishes out, they have fooled the masses into believing this is rock music at its finest.

dear micheal, carol and dayan. i reserve the right to judge you solely on your taste in music. and well, you suck. please ask the person next to you to to kick you. hard. and then either youtube the black keys and listen to them for the rest of the day or bang your head against a wall until you pass out... whichever you believe will refrain you from making utterly stupid comments on virtual media. kind regards, pieter

      So true! :-)

Sheesh! The Black Keys don't even sound that different to Nickelback to make an outrageous statement like this. El Camino is quite good stuff, but not out of this world. The same goes for Nickelback's "here and now" (or whatever).

  • ruanjjfb - 2012-01-05 21:11

WTF. Nickleback is bloody awesome! They may not be the best musicians ever.. but their music has power. The Black keys are just jealous coz they will never be able to rock as hard.

  • Claire Knoechl - 2012-01-05 21:58

Nickleback rules! Never heard of the black keys??

  • carol.neethling - 2012-01-06 15:38

To Pieter, You don't have the right to judge anyone - especially those that you don't know. Jealousy makes you so nasty - your comments are completely rubbish. You obviously don't have good taste in music. I made the effort to go on The Black Keys home page - as no one I know has ever heard of them - not very well known are they???? I had a look at the pictures and listened to their music. The look like two nerds trying to be rock stars - what a laugh!!!! There music wasn't nice either. You are the one that should stop commenting on virtual media as you don't know what you are talking about. Nickelback rules!!!

      Aimée Mia Mae Shaw - 2012-01-08 06:26

Dude how old are you? You sound like a 16yr old chick from a small town in louisiana. You clearly have no taste in music. Also you just said you don't have the right to judge people you don't know, yet you are judging the black keys straight up. It sounds to me like you have only quickly googled their music and listened to one song. Where i come from everyone listens to them. Also nickle back kinda dead don't you think. Your comments are ridiculous

      carol.neethling - 2012-01-10 07:34

Hey Aimee - I am not 16 and definitely not from the US even!! I haven't judged them at all - that's just my opinion. Nickelback is definitely not dead. The Black Keys are just regretting that they didn't take the chance when they should have. Let's just leave it at that.
