The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan in hospital after being arrested for assault

London - The Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan has been taken to hospital after being arrested on Monday.

The 43-year-old star was arrested after allegedly assaulting a female flight attendant and a police officer on an Aer Lingus flight from New York JFK which arrived early this morning in Shannon, County Clare, Ireland.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus is quoted by Irish broadcaster RTE News as saying: "An incident took place on board flight EI110 en route from New York to Shannon today.

"The matter is being investigated by An Garda Síochána. As this is a security matter we will not comment any further."

Following the alleged incident, Dolores was taken to University Hospital Limerick after being medically assessed by a doctor at Shannon Garda Station.

The air hostess was said to have been taken to Mid-Western Regional Hospital but the police officer wasn't thought to have been seriously hurt.

Dolores shot to fame in the 1990s as lead singer of the Irish group, who became a worldwide success, with albums such as 1993's Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? and 1994's No Need to Argue, and have sold more than 40 million albums across the globe.

She has three children, son Taylor, 16, and daughters Molly, 13, and nine-year-old Dakota with her husband, former Duran Duran tour manager Don Burton, who she married in 1994.
