These local music fans are doing something absolutely amazing to save Cape Town's largest animal shelter!

Cape Town – Three friends, a quick visit to one of Cape Town's largest animal shelters and a passion for music is all you need...

After finding out that Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre in Cape Town had been notified to vacate their current premises in just 3 months, Tiaan van Zyl, a volunteer at the shelter, SA Music Scene founder Ashley Brown and photographer Vetman decided it was time to act.

And after a visit to the shelter, which provides a secure home for 500 animals, a one day music festival to raise funds – The Fluffy Fundraiser Festival – was born.

Tiaan, who’s been volunteering at the shelter for quite some time, told Channel24 that the three friends "decided to organise a music festival to create awareness amongst the public regarding the animals’ and shelter’s plight".

And "as they cannot speak for themselves, they need humans to do so for them", Tiaan added.

Festival details

The festival is taking place on Sunday, 18 May at Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville, and according to Ashley, "it is aimed to be a family friendly event were people can come have fun while their kids play in the background".

Gates will open at 10:30 and bands will kick off at 11:00 and will run to 18:00.There will be a cash bar (no card facilities or ATM) and the venue will be providing a stall to buy food.

According to the organisers, most of the costs have been covered for the event, except for the events permit of R10 000.

"We are still desperately looking for sponsorship/ part-sponsorship for this amount," says Tiaan.

"We sincerely ask people to please attend the festival in support of these animals and the amazing work that is being done at Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre by its employees and volunteers. Our thanks to those who have already purchased tickets, made donations and are supporting this endeavour."

Festival organisers have also revealed that they are aiming to make this an annual event where the proceeds will go to a different charity each year.
