Pretoria – The Voortrekker monument in Pretoria has been destroyed. This rumour spread like wild fire in Oudtshoorn after a distraught reader phoned Beeld offices with the alleged news.
It seems that many people misunderstood a clip shown on Afrikaans television network, kykNET, that refers to a natural disaster wiping out the Voortrekker monument.
The programme in question was interrupted with a supposed breaking news clip that claimed that thousands of people are seeking shelter since a disaster hit the monument.
The clip however is part of a music video by Afrikaans singer Jakkie Louw.
The monument's spokesperson, Geraldine Paulsen, commented that she wondered how long it will take before people became distressed.
According to Paulsen the video was shot two weeks ago and features special effects that show the monument being "destroyed".
Watch the video below:
Louw’s spokesperson, Andrew James, said that the filming of the video was a lot of fun. "The video is about various topics such as language and culture and the fact that everything has been produced in South Africa."
The music video ends with a scene in which men hand each other bricks as a metaphor to convey the Afrikaner’s ability to rebuild that which has been broken down.
