Melktert (milk tart in English) is known as a traditional South African tea time treat that consists of a sweet crust pastry filled with a delicious creamy filling and finished off with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
To celebrate the special day Channel24 was delighted to chat to Lucinda Neethling from local band, Die Melktert Kommissie on what they think of a good old melktert.
Does everyone in the band eat melktert? (Is someone lactose intolerant?)
“Yes everyone eats melktert. Maybe not so much anymore because of all the melktert we got to eat on photoshoots.”
Who makes the best melktert? (Or where can we find the best melktert?)
“My husband usually buys us melktert... I think he gets it mostly from Groenkloof Spar.”
What will you be doing on National Melktert Day?
“I’ll be singing Melktert Kommissie songs of course!”

Which of your songs make a perfect companion when enjoying a slice of Melktert?
“Proudly South African of course!”
Does the Kommissie approve of National Melktert Day?
