We had a quickie with Acoustic Element

2015-03-04 06:00

Cape Town - Jody Abel and Callen Petersen make up the dynamic duo that is Acoustic Element.

The duo which started in 2010, is a well known local act that take current pop songs and put there own little acoustic twist on it.

We had a quick interview with Acoustic Element and asked them about their background, music and other little random things.

Channel24: While growing up did you always plan to become the acoustic duo you are today?

Acoustic Element: No not at all. It didn't cross our mind. We had different dreams.

Callen: I started playing violin at the age of 7 and was classically trained. My mom plays the violin that’s how I got into it. But growing up I was also driven towards numbers and fashion, never towards a career in music. That’s why I studied finance and fashion.

Jody: We both studied music in primary school and high school, but that’s as far as it went. And I’ve been passionate about golf, and at one stage even wanted to become an artist but never a musician, I would have never considered it.

Channel24: Do you write and play any of your own music?

Acoustic Element: We do write sometimes. Our two radio singles we worked on is our own original sound.

Jody: I wouldn’t say we write music per se like other musicians do, our writing comes in how we interpret pop songs, and put our own twist on it.  But we are working on our original music which is a future plan.

Channel24:  How long have you been playing musical instruments? And can you play other instruments?

Callen: I started playing violin when I was 7 but I also play the organ and the piano.

Jody: And I started playing the guitar at 13 but also play the trumpet and bass guitar.

Channel24: What’s the weirdest song request you’ve ever received?

Jody: People at certain weddings always ask for Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven. It’s so strange because we weren’t born in the 1970’s, but the amount of times we’ve been asked to play Led Zeppelin is insane. It’s a brilliant song, but we ignore the request (laughs) because we play songs that are current and happening at the moment.

Channel24: What's your favourite song to play at the moment?

Acoustic Element: Take Me To Church by Hozier.

Channel24: Does your family make you play or entertain at family gatherings?

Jody: All the time! And our family is 100 plus people!

Callen: We have a birthday list that goes on our fridge and if we miss one of them we’re in trouble

Acoustic Element: But we always try to avoid the family asking us to play, but the funny thing is we normally do have a gig.

Channel24: What is your favourite pizza topping?

Callen: Banana! But with garlic.

Jody: Avo, bacon, and feta.
