CITY PRESS REVIEW: Emtee releases one of the best hip-hop albums of 2017

Johannesburg - Mthembeni Ndevu, better known as Emtee, continues to not only stay relevant, but somehow create his own identity in trap. The king of the genre continued to cement his name in the
hip-hop fraternity with last month’s release of his second album, Manando.

In this project, the hustler continues to give his fans touching songs. Manando will get you imagining how much the fallen hero meant to the rapper, who he says used to protect him from bullies in high school.

One thing that got my attention is how he’s managed to deliver quality material without featuring any rapper outside his stable. This could be Emtee showing the world that he doesn’t depend on others to produce good stuff and stay relevant.

Great singles include Ghetto Hero – which was released early this year – and Corner Store, a track that reminds his fans that he’s still the Emtee they know and love. Except for Ghetto Hero, the rapper stuck with his usual trap sound.

The Matatiele-born artist reminisces about how he made it from the ghetto to stardom on this album. Then, for the guy who loves that girl but doesn’t have the guts to tell her, Jets is the song for a little inspiration.

“I just wanna be with you/ I don’t be out in Taboo, steady balling like a fool/ Been loving you since school,” he raps.

Unfortunately, the album lacks the type of award-winning material like Roll Up, Pearl Thusi and Winning, which made his first album a platinum seller.

Despite that, it’s worth spending your hard-earned cash on as it is definitely a contender for the best hip-hop album of the year. It won’t be long before it reaches gold.
