CITY PRESS REVIEW: Shane Eagle's new music video lets it flow

Johannesburg - Shane Eagle just proved my point: this guy should have won Vuzu Amp’s The Hustle! He’s outshone the other contestants since he was booted off the show.

In control of his own career, the rapper and TV presenter has put out an impressive music video for his single Let It Flow, which is off his debut album Yellow. The video and the album illustrate how he’s grown as an artist since his days of trying to impress AKA, Khuli Chana and Stogie T.

The video, directed by ArmsDeal, is beautifully executed. It shows how Eagle isn’t just a rapper, but also an entertainer – which has started the debate over whether he is better than everyone’s favourite rapper. AKA once said the reason Eagle has been more successful than others on The Hustle was because he understood the importance of being an all-round entertainer.

If you listen to Let It Flow, Eagle toys with the debate a couple of times: “Why your favourite rapper acting like a bitch/ Your favourite rapper is a pop-star darling.”

Eagle kinda is too, and on Yellow he’s at times a little Travis Scott and Drake-esque. Which isn’t a bad thing – his rhymes are slightly dreary at times, but the beat, his flow and the visuals more than make up for that.

This project has set a high bar for Eagle’s peers. While the style of the Let It Flow video is not new, one of the more interesting concepts is the rapper at Wits west campus walking into still images of himself – think back to Kanye West’s music video for Mercy.

Eagle dropped the video for Need Me on the same day as Let It Flow, and it isn’t too bad either. Sure, at times it has “emo rapper” vibes, but he sounds good.
