Coldplay to headline Glastonbury Festival for fourth time

Los Angeles - Coldplay have been confirmed as the first headliners for the Glastonbury Festival.

The Paradise hitmakers teased fans on Tuesday morning by tweeting a photo of the music festival's Pyramid Stage with a signpost with the date, Sunday 26 June on it and a hot air balloon in their album colours.

And a spokesperson for the music festival - which is held in Somerset, south west England - has since confirmed them as the first revealed headline act.

A statement on Glastonburyfestivals.co.uk reads: "Coldplay today became the first headline act to be confirmed for Glastonbury Festival 2016. They will top the Pyramid Stage bill on Sunday, June 26th."

The rockers - consisting of Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion - will also make music history by being the first artist to headline four times and it will be their only festival date of their A Head Full Of Dreams Tour.

The Glastonbury spokesperson added: "The band will become the first artists to headline Glastonbury on four occasions, following previous Pyramid Stage headline appearances in 2002, 2005 and 2011.

"Their 2011 set was later voted the Top Glastonbury Moment of the event's long history by BBC Radio listeners. The Glastonbury performance will be Coldplay's only festival show of this year's A Head Full Of Dreams Tour."

Coldplay join previously announced ELO, who were confirmed to be playing the legend's Sunday afternoon slot at the world famous music festival.

And Bee Gee's singer Barry Gibb has also been tipped to perform on the same afternoon.

This year Glastonbury takes place between 22 June and 26 June.
