First look: Local singer Bianca Wood’s brand new music video

Cape Town – Local singer-songwriter Bianca Wood has released a brand new single, titled Blue, together with a music video.

Having released her debut album, titled Time, in 2015, Bianca is back with some brand new music in 2017.

We chat to Bianca about her brand new single and video below:

How are you and what have you been up to?

I am good, thank you and probably like everyone else, I am attempting to start this 2017 with my best foot forward. What have I been up to? I've come home (Cape Town) from a small summer New Year's tour to Plettenberg Bay with my band and I've jumped straight into practicing, planning, writing new music, some more planning, a lot more practicing. I have just finished writing a lot more music too - something that I cannot get enough of.

Tell us more about your new song, Blue. What is it about?

I wrote Blue at the start of 2016. I have been living in Cape Town for a few years now and I enjoy spending time in and by the ocean. I wouldn't call myself obsessed with water or deep into water activities, but there is a stillness that I find there despite my racing mind. It resembles a type of safety that you feel in a person who you love very much - call them your "sapphire bones that take you to the quiet of the ocean".

A comfort that makes you numb to any negativity for a moment. I guess, Blue was inspired by that experience. My good friend, Kelly-Eve Koopman wrote some of the lyrics with me and then my band and I performed a very different version of Blue for the most part of 2016 before I was ready to get it produced by Ewald Jansen van Rensburg from Monark.  Blue's "vibe" is positive and uplifting and essentially, the evocation of a happy, quiet moment.  It was written and produced for everyone and I am hoping that it would make people feel good and not alone. I should probably say that it is available for free download on my website: www.biancawood.com.

What was the concept for the video and when did you shoot it?

This video was built in layers. The concept and direction was done by Martin Venter. We filmed half of the video (the underwater, ocean half), edited it and then used it as projection. The video illustrates the juggling of Blue's lyrical ambiguity: "the best kind of dark" vs "blue light". My friend Taryn Sudding was happily thrown into water (Woodstock pools) and made to dive and float and swim, and generally hold her breath.

Her character represents an entrapment which is later lifted from her as she escapes the water to further fight her demons on the outside. In the video, my character narrates this as well as represents the uniformity of this feeling of entrapment and escape. I didn't realise that a human being could have the breath capacity that Thabo Kunutu has - he filmed Taryn and myself under water. After that, Martin filmed our performances at Mount Rozier Estate in Somerset West.

What's next for you?

Well, now that we have released Blue, we are lining up the rest of an EP. I am working closely with producer and songwriter, Thabo Kunutu, who has served as production manager on this EP and we are, along with the rest of the Bianca Wood team really excited to release and keep releasing new music this year.

Where can people see you perform?

I will be at the Saggy Stone beer and music festival on the 11th of February with the band - Michael Raven and Luke Otto. We are excited for this one.
