Johannesburg - Kimberley is fast becoming a bit of a cultural mecca. Next week, the Northern Cape town’s first major jazz event – the SA Jazz Festival – takes place there from 16 to 17 December.
Raymond “Ray” Phiri will be headlining the event, along with other jazz greats such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Judith Sephuma, Hugh Masekela and artists from other genres, such as DJ Black Coffee.
Speaking to #Trending from Johannesburg this week, the Mpumalanga-born musician says he can’t wait to reconnect with his supporters. “I’m going to take my people down memory lane, but with some surprises on stage as well,” he says.
He’s looking forward to playing in the town once famous for the discovery of the biggest diamond in the world.
“I love Kimberley so much because of its history and cultural diversity,” he says. We continue talking and just as he’s busy explaining the work behind his next album, he says: “You’re making me want to perform right now.”
Then, to my surprise, he starts singing Zakwala – his hit song.
For a moment it felt like I was in the studio with a legend. It was a real honour and it made me wish time would pass faster so that I could see him perform on stage.
