Cape Town - Karen Zoid's new single Waar Was Jy? was especially written and recorded for Huisgenoot’s 100th birthday.
On 20 May 2016 Huisgenoot will celebrate a century of living in Afrikaans households. Zoid was immediately inspired after paging through the special Huisgenoot 100 book. She says: “I closed the book and with my guitar on my lap, I started to write and sing the chorus of the song: "'n Wêreld groot of klein, vol geluk en ook pyn. Kan jy onthou waar was jy?'"
Zoid explains that life is not a clear mirror. "We all experience highs and lows, and what makes Huisgenoot so essential is that the stories constantly remind us that we are not alone in this world."
When Minette Ferreira, general manager of Media24 weeklies, had the idea of commissioning a special song for Huisgenoot’s special celebration, she knew Karen Zoid was the woman for the job. Ferreira says it initially felt like an impossible request.
"An idea is one thing, but how do you capture 100 years of a truly South African brand in a single song? But I knew that Karen Zoid could capture what we wanted with her exceptional writing and musical talent. What she’s accomplished is remarkable, and it is an absolute privilege to share Waar Was Jy? with our readers," says Ferreira.
"With the words and melody of Waar was Jy? Karen succeeded in capturing the emotion of our milestone perfectly," says Henriëtte Loubser, Huisgenoot’s editor. "Huisgenoot writes about ordinary people, as well as celebrities’ glory and disappointments. The song empathetically conveys that life is full of ups and downs, and through our stories, Huisgenoot reflects the humanity that binds us together. If you hear it once, the chorus keeps lingering in your head. We think the song is going to be a big hit!"
Waar Was Jy? was recorded at Belville Studios and produced by Theo Crous.
The video of the single has also just been released. The images take one back to some classic South African and international moments of the past century.
