Cape Town - According to a report by TMZ, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington has committed suicide.

The gossip site reported that the singer hanged himself at a private residence. His body was discovered at 09:00 on Thursday morning.

The Associated Press confirmed the news in a tweet: "BREAKING: Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington dies at 41, Los Angeles County coroner says."

According to Billboard.com the 41-year-old singer struggled with drug and alcohol addictions at various times during his life. He was married and is survived by six children.

Rolling Stone reports that the singer, who was born on 20 March 1976 in Phoenix, had a rough childhood and was molested and beaten up by an older friend from the age of seven.

Bennington was close friends with Chris Cornell, who also committed suicide earlier this year. He performed at Cornell's funeral, and wrote an open letter to the star after his death.
