Johannesburg - It may have taken award-winning Afro-pop singer Ntando Bangani almost 12 years to release a new album, except for a single here and there, but his stars are shining again – he has released a new album named Mayibuye, which reveals his maturing soul as it celebrates his African spirit and sense of being.
He tells City Press that he is still trying to beat the Ntando who catapulted to fame with the hit song Nguwe, which was released in 2005.
However, he needed to take some time to find himself and build up the bravery to bring his fans some new and thought-provoking music to match and reflect his life now. He is excited with how his fans have welcomed him after taking some time away from his craft to reinvent himself.
The album, he believes, has been carefully crafted to celebrate African cultures, hence the name of the album Mayibuye, which used to be a rallying cry for Pan-African scholars, struggle heroes and heroines, as well as liberation movements.
Ntando says the album also addresses social ills affecting communities, which need attention.
“The song in the album titled Mayibuye is one of my favourites. It talks about reclaiming our identity as Africans,” he says.
The 15-track album also features new artists: “I have worked with fresh talent that goes by the name of Flango group, which was amazing because they have what it takes to bring good music to music lovers,” Ntando says.
He adds that he believes he has not lost touch during his time away because it was always about the music.
He chose to release the album during heritage month because the album is particularly about heritage, culture and Africans. He plans to record music videos for most of his songs in this album to put the message across.
“I will be doing tours around the country with lots of performances to reconnect with my people,” Ntando enthuses.
The singer has promised his fans surprise performances this month. He will be sharing the stage with other Afro-soul musicians, including Vusi Nova and Sindile “Ringo” Madlingozi.
