Cape Town - When she’s not paying homage to the greats, what is Thandiswa Mazwai listening to?
"I haven’t been listening to a lot of stuff because I’ve been making my own music and I didn’t want to crowd my head with other people’s ideas, because they have a way of seeping into your ideas. So, I don’t like to listen while I’m working, but there is some stuff I am enjoying," she told us. Here they are:
Nomsa Mazwai
"I love my sister’s album – Nomisupasta – it’s incredible. And it’s not because she’s my sister. I don’t do that – supporting someone because we are friends or related... If you’re wack, you’re wack and her album is most certainly not wack. She’s quite incredible and you should check it out."
Skunk Anansie
"I’ve just heard the new Skunk Anansie [British punk rock group] album, and I reeaaally love it. I’m a huge punk music lover ... I’m a rock star. I’m into that (laughs)."
Wizkid
"I love Wizkid. I am on his last album [Ayo] and his hit single Ojuelegba. What a great song and a great talent. I’m really enjoying Wizkid’s music, and it’s great to see the rest of the world is too."
Dancehall
"I like a lot of dancehall music ... as misogynistic as it is ... [and because misogyny is so pervasive]. You know what I do now? If my friends and I are listening to an album, or watching a movie, and there is misogyny, we shout ‘MISOGYNY!’ to make it clear that we’ve seen or heard it."
