Random things we overheard at Rocking The Daisies 2017: More trees, less assholes

Cape Town – 25 000 festival fans made the annual pilgrimage to Darling in the Western Cape this weekend for Rocking the Daisies.

Below is overheard conversations and random tidbits collected over the four days.

Describing Daisies:

“No words.”

“I’m not in the right state of mind to answer that now, maybe that is exactly how you can describe it.”

“It’s a once in a lifetime experience. I grew up in Swaziland and now studying in Stellies, that’s where I heard about Daises. You don’t see sad people here, everyone is just so happy.”

“It’s only in South Africa where they would stop a whole music festival to screen the rugby. I dig that, and the people. These are my people! I’ll definitely come back.” 

Highlights:

“The international acts where cool, but for me it was actually those smaller stages where you discover all these amazing unknown local artists.”

“Just talking and interacting with random people. There are so many interesting people here.”

“Alice Phoebe Lou. Dude, she’s my future wife.”

Random things overheard:

“More trees, less assholes.” 

“We are probably the only people at this festival going for a run now.”

“Mate, you look panfried,” a FaceTime conversation inside the men’s urinals.

Walking through the “glamping” site:

“We have a heater and a fan. We put the glamp in glamping.”

Daisies Fashion:

Babette Kahlo custom makes her own outfits each year for the festival. Every day a new and different outfit. Her boyfriend David, joins in on this with a colour-coded matching outfit. “Your wardrobe says a lot about you and sends out an energy, and we want to send out a positive energy when we’re here,” says Babette.

International Acts:

Flume:

“It’s beautiful. We went surfing yesterday at that beach with all the colourful houses (Muizenberg).”

The Naked and Famous:

Thom: “We didn’t really have any expectation, but we have lots of South Africans in New Zealand. Half my friends growing up were South Africans, so we knew enough about the culture here.”

Alisa: “If it wasn’t for music we wouldn’t have been here now.”

Two Door Cinema Club:

“The atmosphere here, everyone just seems so happy and friendly and up for a good time.”
