SA music stars: Then and Now

Cape Town – We recently did an article where we looked at some of today’s biggest stars who started their career in the 90s.

If you missed it, check it out here.

And now we’ve decided to keep it local by taking a look at some of SA’s biggest exports in the music industry when they just started out until now.

1) Kurt Darren

From his English-singing days to Meisie, Meisie and Kaptein, this captain of the Afrikaans music industry is back at it and taking names.

What’s he up to now? In May this year he released a brand new video for his song Kaalvoet Sokkie which is off his new album, Sal Jy Met My Dans.

2) Amor Vittone

Singer, dancer and presenter, the ex-wife of rugby player Joost van der Westhuizen has made her mark in the entertainment industry in SA. She made a musical comeback in 2015, releasing her first music video in 6 years for her song Alles Net Oor Jou off her new album, Die Tyd Is Nou

What’s she up to now? Amor is currently presenting a TV show on Via (Channel 147 on DStv), titled Skoonma-se-tong.

3) Black Coffee

Since his remix of a Hugh Masakela classic to winning a BET award for Best International Act this year, DJ Black Coffee has been a star of the local music scene for many years.

What’s he up to now? He is currently touring the globe playing mayor music festivals.

4) Patricia Lewis

Not many people know this, but having sold over 600 000 albums to date, Patricia is recognised as the top-selling female recording artist in South African music history. From modelling, to acting and presenting, Patricia has done it all.

What’s she up to now? The last we’ve seen of Patricia was last year when she was a contestant on the celebrity edition of MasterChef South Africa.

5) Steve Hofmeyr

Although Steve is more known for his controversial opinions these days than anything else, he did build his career on his famous singing chops. The Agter Elke Man star has done stage, TV acting and movies, and released his 28th album last year, a tribute to country music, titled If You Could Read My Mind.

What’s he up to now? Steve is currently tweeting about his political views.

6) Danny K

Who can ever forget the song Hurts So Bad? From his early beginnings up to now, Danny K has been breaking hearts with his music and good looks. The dad of one released a brand new single earlier this year with Sketchy Bongo, titled Inside My Head. And has followed it up with another one earlier in August, titled LIT.

What’s he up to now? He is definitely working on more new music and he is actively involved with his NPO Shout SA.
