Taylor Swift’s new song: The reviews are in and they’re mixed

Cape Town – It is finally here, Taylor Swift has released her new single and as expected, the new track sent the internet into a frenzy.

The 27-year-old singer dropped her new hit Look What You Made Me Do late on Thursday after creating much hype about it on social media.

LISTEN TO THE SONG HERE:

While the song was only released a few hours ago, reviews are already in.

Straight off the bat, it’s pretty obvious that Swift is coming back with a vengeance. She is angry and definitely singing about it.

So, who is she singing about?

First names that come to mind are Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry.

The Sydney Morning Herald's Nathanael Cooper called Taylor’s 1989 hit Bad Blood, reportedly a diss track about Katy Perry, a “mere entree for the main meal she makes of Kanye” in Look What You Made Me Do.

And rightly so! Among others, Taylor may be referring to Kanye in the opening lines of the song already.

The words, "I don't like your little games / Don't like your tilted stage" are widely being compared to West's recent tour that featured a floating stage.

Cooper adds that a big question surrounding Swift’s new hit is whether it will gain attention for its content or the music itself, which he called “not the catchiest song Swift has released”.

Another reference, to Kim Kardashian this time, is towards the end of the song when Taylor creates the illusion of leaving a voice mail.

She sings “I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now / Why? / Oh, 'cause she's dead!”

Entertainment Weekly’s Melody Chiu points out that Swift’s dig at Kardashian comes after the reality TV star shared a phone call between the Shake It Off singer and West discussing him referencing her in his song Famous.

And as for Katy Perry, the release and success of Bad Blood three years ago was just not enough. An apparent reference towards Perry’s hit Bon Appétit comes in the lyrics, “Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)”

Interestingly enough, Chiu also points out that Taylor’s fierce lyrics could be targeted towards “the media’s perception of her as a hypocrite”.

The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon called Swift’s diss track many things, including “a thumping dance track soaked in paranoid psycho-pop melodrama.”

While not dissecting every line and assigning it to any apparent enemy of Swift’s, Fallon points out that the Blank Space hitmaker wanted to make it clear that she is seeking revenge on all her haters.

Sadly she may have dropped the ball on her musical abilities in order to make a statement.

Even Swifties are questioning their music mogul’s motives for her new music, sharing mixed feelings on social media within minutes of the song’s release.
