Q&A: Noah Cyrus talks music and visiting SA!

Cape Town – Noah Cyrus is no newbie when it comes to the entertainment industry.

The little sister of Miley Cyrus, 17-year-old Noah has danced in a movie, she’s acted in a TV series, and now she’s taking on singing as a career.

Noah recently released the second single off her much-anticipated debut album which is set to drop later this year. She debuted the song, titled Stay Together, earlier this week with a live performance at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. 

We got to chat to her about her performance, her new music and whether she’ll ever visit SA.

You performed at the MTV Movie and TV Awards recently, what was it like and was this your biggest performance yet?

Uhm, in a way, it kinda was my biggest performance, I mean it was quite different than what I’m used to, like with the production and the dancers and the skateboarders... In that way it was definitely the biggest thing I’ve ever done when I was performing. I was so excited to be doing that, because I was there to perform my song Stay Together, cos I feel like that song’s energy is just so contagious when you’re in a room full of people. I feel like everybody in the room were just, it was a young room, like the music, I feel like it was kind of the perfect show to debut Stay Together for the very first time on stage. And also, it was the first time I got to perform with my new bandmates, so I’m really excited about that. We’re about to go on all these radio shows together, so I was just really excited about the whole thing. 

You come from a musical family, was it always expected of you to go into a musical direction or to sing?

Uhm, I mean, it wasn’t always like expected, I definitely was thinking about doing different things. It just kind of happened when I was 14, I kinda like fell in love with it. 

If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing for a career?

I would still be riding horses every day. I was riding horses every single day up until November and when my single came out, I just haven’t been able to ride horse any more. But I would definitely still be doing horse shows and riding horses. 

You’ve released two singles so far, when will your next release be and what can fans expect? 

Uhm, I don’t know when my next release is, I think what’s nice about what I’m doing right now is that I’m really taking my time with things and doing things one step at a time. And my team is letting me take things at my own pace, you know, to get comfortable with who I am. I’m still figuring out what I want to put out there, because I am letting it be as organic as possible. 

The album that is coming out later this year, did you write all the songs, did you have input in all the songs?

I co-wrote all of the songs, you know I’ve done sessions with people, so I have co-writers in the room, so I’ve been writing with some really talented people. 

What do you write about, what inspires you?

Uhm, I mean lots of things, everything on that album was very personal to me and about my life. Every song is just so personal, that I think people will really get to know me through this album. Because when they’re hearing my words on their phone, or through their computer, or you know however they’re listening to it, they’ll really be hearing me and I’m telling them things that have happened to me and that every situation was so real. 

Will this album only be you, or will there be any collaborations with your dad or your sister?

There are no collaborations with anyone except with Labrinth on this album, so far. But really like I think of collaborating with writers and producers. I’ve really worked with some incredible writers so far like Johnny English and Labrinth and I just find the opportunity to write with them incredible. 

Who are you listening to currently and is there anyone who inspires you?

I’m always listening to Ben Howard, Band of Horses and so on. I also love Chance the Rapper though! I think he’s really amazing. But Ben Howard is like my musical guru, I look up to him so much. 

You’re still very young, and you obviously started out in the entertainment industry at a very young age, if you had to give anyone advice who is starting out, what would you say to them?

Uhm, I would say just be yourself and find friends who are interested in getting into music and go into your room and start writing music and recording it on your computer of your cellphone. Just start writing and figure out what type of music you want to do and what style you wanna do and just be yourself. Yeah you know, make it about you.
