We chat to pop singer Alexandra May about her debut EP

Cape Town – New pop talent Alexandra May released her debut EP, titled One, on Friday.

One comes after the release of her first single, Amazing, and her second single from the EP, Highlights.

The EP was produced by Ziggy Adolf and was recorded during 2015 and 2016 at David Gresham Records Studios.

She chose the word One as album title for a variety of reasons - she is a solo artist, with one team that has one goal, and all the songs on the EP have one word as their title. The EP also features two covers done in Alexandra’s unique way, namely First by Cold War Kids, and Photograph by Ed Sheeran.

We had a quick chat with her about the release:

What are you most excited about with the release of your debut EP?

I'm mostly excited to simply have an EP out! Having my 2 singles released this year was huge for me, but to have a collection of songs out there is #aMAYzing! A body of work coming into focus!

What can fans expect from the EP?

One is a collection, a mixture of emotions from romance to heartbreak to inspiration. Each song has a special place in my heart and I hope that listeners will feel that too. The EP is fresh and simple.

Describe your sound in one sentence.

Is the word ‘simple’ a sound? I’m a singer and love melodies! I would love people to love singing along to my songs! (oops? …… 3 sentences)

What do you write about and what inspired the songs on the album?

I like to write about experiences and lessons I've learned from people and life. As an example, one of the tracks Breathe was written after a break-up. Sometimes it’s just a phrase that inspires a melody!

What is your writing process?

I have lists of notes on my phone, of lyrics and concepts. It starts there sometimes. Then I'll sit at my keyboard and mess around with some chords until I find what I'm looking for. Sometimes I finish a song within a couple hours, and other times it'll takes days to perfect.

What’s next for you?

I shall continue to write more ….. I’m a newbie in the business and am finding my way.  It’s an exciting journey!

Where can people see you perform next?

I have a few gigs lined up for the rest of the year, but keep an eye on Facebook - I'll keep you in the loop!
