Who is Oh Roxy? #ThisIsMe

Cape Town – Meet Cape Town’s newest alternative pop act, Oh Roxy.

The 21-year-old singer moved to Cape Town to follow her dreams in music, where she majored in vocals at COPA (Campus of Performing Arts) for 2 years, after that, she auditioned for Idols South Africa, where she placed in the Top 9 of Season 10.

Her debut single, This is me, releases today on iTunes.

We get to know Roxy a bit better:

Channel24: Where are you from and when did music start for you?

Roxy: I'm originally from Durban. But I moved to Cape Town after matric to major in vocals at COPA. After our first vocal practical, I knew that music was the career choice I needed to take, so I decided to pursue it; and it's been the best decision I've made.

Channel24: What is the one thing no one knows about you?

Roxy: Hmmm. I'm vegetarian. 6th generation in my family too! Never eaten meat before. How's that for cool trivia?

Channel24: Your new single, what is the song about and what inspired it?

Roxy: While I was in Idols Season 10, the public saw me as 'Amy Winehouse', and I really didn't want to be perceived in that way. So shortly after Idols I found producer Kamil Govender, and from there Oh Roxy came into play. My new single This Is Me is an introduction to my weird, real self. This way the public can see me as Oh Roxy, the musician and performer that I am, and slowly drift away from the Idols brand.

Channel24: Who are your musical influences?

Roxy: Musical influences have to be Hozier - his tone and lyrics are incredible! Alt J - love their experimental vibe. And Foster The People - also very experimental and his vocal range is fantastic. Would love to see all 3 live one day!

Channel24: What can people expect to hear and see from you in the future?

Roxy: My single This Is Me is being released today, 11 March, and shortly after that Oh Roxy’s EP in April. Exciting times ahead!
