Angelina praises Brad for his support

Los Angeles - Angelina Jolie has praised her fiancé Brad Pitt for standing by her throughout her breast cancer scare and subsequent double mastectomy operation.

The Salt actress made the brave decision to go ahead with a procedure that would reduce her risk of contracting breast cancer from 87% to only 5% after discovering that she was carrying the BRCA1 cancer gene.

The 37-year-old wrote in an article for the New York Times that she can now "tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."

Angelina wrote about the importance of having a strong support base, praising Brad, with whom she has six children, for being there every step of the way saying: "I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive.

"So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition."

'This was the right thing to do'

"Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has."

Angelina has been applauded for her bravery and openness regarding her treatment and fellow celebs and cancer survivors took to Twitter to show their support.

Sheryl Crow tweeted: "I commend Angelina Jolie for her courage and thoughtfulness in sharing her story today regarding her mastectomy. So brave!"

And Giuliana Rancic wrote: "proud of her for using her incredible platform to educate women."
