Geneva - British singer Annie Lennox was appointed on Tuesday as the United Nations goodwill ambassador for HIV/Aids.
First rising to fame during the 1980s when she was with the Eurythmics, the Scottish musician has since launched a solo career which has been heavily mixed with political activism, including on anti-war campaigns, women's rights and for HIV issues.
"If we are to end the cycle of human devastation triggered by the Aids epidemic, we must address the rights of women and girls and challenge their second class citizen status, which puts them at greater risk of HIV," Lennox said in a statement issued by the Unaids agency.
According to the agency, "the lack of access to quality sexual and reproductive health services contributes to the high number of deaths among women of the reproductive age."
