New York— The son of an Oscar-winning composer is facing 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of strangling his fashion designer girlfriend in the bathtub of a hotel room.
Nicholas Brooks was scheduled to appear in court Monday for sentencing. He was convicted in July of murder in the death of 33-year-old Sylvie Cachay. Her body was found partially clothed in an overflowing tub on 9 Decemeber, 2010.
The two had a tumultuous six-month relationship. Prosecutors say he strangled her after she tried to end their relationship.
The 27-year-old Brooks is the son of Joseph Brooks, who wrote You Light Up My Life. He killed himself amid his own criminal investigation in 2011.
The younger Brooks' attorney suggested that Cachay drowned accidentally after mixing alcohol with prescription medication.
