London - British adventurer Ranulph Fiennes has been charged with driving without due care and attention after a car crash in March, prosecutors said on Monday.
The 66-year-old's Jaguar hit a car head on before crashing into another and mounting a pavement in Manchester, northern England.
Fiennes - who the night before the accident had completed a 67km endurance challenge, the High Peak Marathon, nearby - was left dazed and with blood on his face, according to eyewitnesses at the time.
The driver of the first car struck suffered serious injuries including collapsed lungs, broken ribs and a broken leg, while a five-year-old child in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
"I have concluded that there is sufficient evidence, and it is in the public interest, to charge Sir Ranulph Fiennes with driving without due care and attention," said lawyer Nicholas Beckett of the Crown Prosecution Service.
Fiennes is to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court in northern England later this year, a CPS spokesperson added.
Fiennes was the first explorer to complete a tour of the world on foot and then sailed between the two poles in 1982 before crossing Antarctica on foot with his long-time adventuring partner Michael Stroud in 1993.
The adventurer, who became the oldest Briton to climb to the summit of Everest last year aged 65, had a triple heart bypass in 2003 following a heart attack.
