Los Angeles - Whitney Houston was found dead in the bath of her Beverly Hills hotel room, ABC news reported on Sunday citing paramedics who had rushed to the singer's aid but found her "lifeless".
When asked if there were drugs in the pop star's room, Ed Winter, from the Los Angeles county coroner's office, said he could not comment, the report said.
Beverly Hills police were unable to confirm the report when contacted by AFP.
Houston died on Saturday in Beverly Hills on the eve of the Grammy Awards, where the 48-year-old's career is expected to be marked with a musical tribute. A post mortem is expected on Sunday or Monday.
Musicians, many already in Los Angeles ahead of the Grammys, lined up to pay tribute to the singer, who sold over 170 million records before descending into a very public battle with substance abuse.
A police spokesperson on Saturday said there were no obvious signs of criminal intent surrounding Houston's death.
Attempts were made to resuscitate her, but failed.
