Pete Doherty quizzed over theft

Berlin - British singer Pete Doherty has been questioned in Germany on suspicion of stealing a guitar and records, police said on Friday.

The Babyshambles frontman, who is under investigation along with two other men, denies stealing the guitar valued at $415 from a store window in the Bavarian city of Regensburg.

Doherty said he was at the scene of the incident in the early hours on Tuesday but was not involved. "I was there but it wasn't me," he told German television.

The 31-year-old rocker is in Regensburg to shoot a film with French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Police declined to name the two other suspects in the case but said one was a prominent individual.

The case has been passed to prosecutors who will decide whether to bring charges of burglary against the three men, police said.

Doherty has gained a bad-boy public image involving drugs and legal run-ins from the time he shot to fame in the 2000s as the singer of British band The Libertines.

It is not the first time he has hit the headlines while in Germany.

In 2009, he apologised after singing banned verses of the German national anthem at a concert in Munich and was arrested in Berlin for allegedly smashing a car window.

The verses of the anthem were banned after World War Two because of their association with Nazism.
