London - The glamorous gals of Sex and the City swept to the top of the box office on the debut of their sequel in Britain with one of the year's biggest opening takes, according to Screen International, on Wednesday.
Critics hated Sex and the City 2, which reunites actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis with director Michael Patrick King.
But British audiences thought otherwise, paying £6.1m to see it on the three days from Friday to Sunday over the holiday weekend.
Last week's chart topper, 3D dance musical Streetdance, was down in second place while Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton in Disney's Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time were down one spot at three. Director Ridley Scott's take on the legend of Robin Hood slipped a place to four.
Family comedy The Tooth Fairy was new at five with the story of a hard-charging, denture-busting hockey player being forced to atone for his sins by becoming a real tooth fairy.
Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr as a billionaire with a suit of invincible armour, was down two places at six, just above newcomer Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back at seven.
The Losers, a tale of US special forces in the Bolivian jungle, made its debut at eight while Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant was unchanged at nine.
Four Lions, a controversial comedic look at a group of British Jihadists and their dreams of glory, had the week's biggest drop, slipping to 10 from six.
