Los Angeles – A photo of Whitney Houston lying in an open coffin that was printed on the cover of the National Enquirer sparked outrage from fans on Wednesday.

The photo, on the cover of this week's edition of the National Enqiurer, reportedly shows the dead singer wearing a purple dress and a diamond brooch and earrings.

According to the Daily Mail, it is said that the photo was taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark where Houston's family viewed her body on Friday, the night before her funeral.

The photo appeared on the weekly American tabloid magazine with the headline: "Whitney: The last photo!"

'So disrespectful!'

Since its publication, the photo of Houston has sparked outrage from fans on social media.

Talk show host Wendy Williams of The Wendy Williams Show tweeted: "The photo of Whitney Houston in her casket to me was just plain wrong."

Another Twitter user said: "I HATE the @natenquirer for posting a picture of Whitney Houston's open CASKET... They need to be put out of business RT (((PLEASE)))"

"Really disgusted that someone close to Whitney Houston took (and obviously sold) her photo in the casket. #disgusted," Debra @AFrugalFriend tweeted.

A disgusted Felicity May Scott also shared her views on Twitter, saying "Ridiculous that photographs of Whitney Houston in an open coffin, are on the front of some newspapers! So disrespectful!"

This is not the first tome the National Enquirer has published photos of celebs in their coffins. In 1980 they published a photo of a dead John Lennon and in 1977 one of Elvis in his coffin.
