Buckingham Palace releases portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

London — Buckingham Palace has released a new Annie Leibovitz portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to mark the final celebrations of her 90th birthday and to celebrate her husband Prince Philip's 95th birthday.

The monarch is shown in a soft-toned image with Prince Philip at Windsor Castle just after Easter. Both are smiling, but only just.

The queen, Britain's oldest and longest-reigning monarch, turned 90 on 21 April. She usually celebrates her birthday privately, but this year's milestone served as the jumping off point for weeks of celebrations.

Her birthday will be marked officially — as usual — with the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Saturday.

A lunch on the Mall, the road leading to Buckingham Palace, will be held on Sunday to celebrate the queen's patronage of 600 organizations, together with street parties and events around the country.
