Cape Town - The small village of McGregor, near Robertson, in the Western Cape is gearing up to host the 5th annual Poetry in McGregor weekend which will take place from 25 to 287 August this year.
Aimed at promoting community spirit, giving a stage to well-known poets as well as nurturing talented young artists, this special weekend offers poets from all over the chance to shine onstage. With over 90 events, you can expect extraordinary poetry recitals, music events, art and workshops.

1) The amazing poets
There is a great range of poets performing at various venues at this year`s event: Ashley Dowds, Hugh Hodge, Patricia Schonstein, John Maytham, Nic de Jager, Kobus Moolman, Lungiswa Nyatyowa, Lerato Sibanda, Philip de Vos, Diana Ferrus, Lara Kirsten, Fanie Olivier, Koos van der Merwe, Mavis Vermaak, Wendy Woodward and many more. 2) The Open Mic sessions
As usual, for those poets who would like to participate spontaneously, a number of Open Mic sessions will also be taking place during the Poetry in McGregor weekend. These sessions are hosted by Hugh Hodge and no tickets or booking are required. Anyone wishing to read or recite their poetry is welcome – from the well-known to budding, new poets.
3) The Haiku Competition
This year Poetry in McGregor Weekend is introducing a Haiku competition for all poets and visitors who are coming to enjoy and celebrate love for the written word. The theme for the Haiku is Rooted in Heart. Entries must be hand delivered to the Temenos reception desk corner of Bree and Voortrekker Street between Thursday evening at 16:00 and Saturday at 16:00 on the weekend of 25 – 27 August. Winners will be announced on Sunday at 12:00.
All entries must be clearly written or typed and include contact details, preferably a cell phone number. The winner will walk away with R1000 CASH plus 2 nights’ accommodation at the beautiful Temenos retreat.
4) The Quiz Night
Begin your Poetry weekend in McGregor by joining our Poetry Quiz. Test your knowledge of poetry in our fun filled Poetry Quiz evening. It will taking place on Thursday 24 August at 19:00. Bookings are essential. Book by phoning 023 6251871 or e-mail info@mcgregorpoetryfestival.co.za.
5) The town of McGregor
McGregor is the perfect venue for a celebration of poetry. Lying at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains, 20km from Robertson, McGregor is a quiet, and serene little town.
