7de Laan couple adopt baby girl

Cape Town - It's not just South Africa's Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron who welcomed her first child recently.

Local celebrity couple Nico and Christi Panagio have also adopted a baby.

In the April issue of Finesse magazine, the Panagios say they devote their daughter Evah - her name means "life" - to God. They also talk about their long struggle for Christi to become pregnant and how, as believers, they received the message that they should adopt a child.

'Most surreal experience'

The couple then decided to adopt, despite a doctor's recommendation to try in vitro treatment.

The Panagios, who both appeared on SABC2 soap opera 7de Laan, had to go through the same strict selection process as other adoptive parents - which were stricter because the couple are celebrities, says Finesse.

Things fell suddenly into place for the couple when the adoption agency called one morning with the news that there may be a baby on the way for them.

They would get their little girl in a week, according to the article.

About being a father, Nico says: "It's the most surreal experience... When I held her against me, she began to hum. Just before she falls asleep, she 'sings'. And her voice touches something deep inside you. "

They kept the adoption quiet at first and told people it was their godchild. Christi says they kept the process a secret on recommendation by the adoption agency.

"The media is such a part of our everyday life and our desire was to protect her and have her to ourselves for a while," she said.
