Johannesburg - US R&B singer-songwriter Brian McKnight might nibble on some cashews before hitting the stage in South Africa in September.

Speaking to City Press from Los Angeles, McKnight says his backstage whims are simple: sandwiches, Doritos and cashew nuts – a favourite.

The low-key star has been nominated for 16 Grammys. However, he has not yet won the coveted statue. Snoop Dogg and McKnight are tied for the record for most Grammy nominations without a win.

Commenting on the gruelling tour schedule that comes with being a top musician, he says: “Well, this has been my lifestyle for the past 20 years, so it’s normal for me. I mean, I can’t remember the last time I was at home for two weeks [in a row].”

McKnight adds that he stays sane by drinking plenty of water, not too much alcohol and getting a lot of sleep. He doesn’t smoke.

He insists that he loves his job.

“My job doesn’t feel like work. I have reached the point in my life where I really just want to do the things I love to do.”

McKnight is divorced with two sons.

Before our interview with the talented musician, concert organisers warned City Press that certain lines of questioning would not be tolerated.

“Brian is not to be asked any questions about his children, any legal issues and stories or rumours,” stated an email.

So, City Press asks him about highlights during a previous South African tour instead.

“I was in Durban when a monkey just came pouncing on to my shoulder on a golf course. I was like ‘Oh my God, this is Africa’,” he says.

“I never imagined that there would be people who love what I do on the other side of the ocean. Music has that incredible power to bring people together.”

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
