Afrikaans scholar, writer dies

Pretoria – The scholar and writer Charles Malan has died in the Eugéne Marais Hosipital in Pretoria at the age of 66 on Wednesday.

He was admitted with kidney failure and pneumonia two weeks ago, where he received a pacemaker and treatment for organ failure.

Professor Fransjohan Pretorius of the University of Pretoria (UP) said Malan's death is a great loss to Afrikaans literature, culture and all those close to him.

"He was a fighter and now he can rest."

Malan was an extraordinary professor in the departments of information science and Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria.

In addition to being an author, academic and research consultant, he was the coordinator of Vrye Woord, a group of mainly Afrikaans writers, academics and publishers.

He is survived by his wife Marietjie Coetzee-Malan and three children.
